“So, you contaminated the crime scene.”
Jinki shifted his weight from one foot to another and gulped audibly before slowly nodding. He couldn't even dare look at his superior's eyes, opting to watch the carpet by his feet. Behind him, Taemin and Jonghyun watched nervously.
“How did that exactly happen? You were supposed to be studying the blood spatters only.”
There was a long silence, with Jinki looking behind him for answers, but was only replied a shrug, before anyone spoke again. “I was going to,” Jinki carefully said. “I saw the blood spatters and was about to go, but I forgot there was a dead body on the floor and I kind of...stepped on it and fell over it and I got blood on my hands and...” his voice faded as an apparent frown appeared on the head inspector's face.
Taemin made a disgusted face behind him. Jonghyun kicked Taemin's leg before speaking. “We managed to secure all the other evidences before Jinki came, so only the blood spatters were compromised, Minho-yah.”
Minho stared at Jonghyun with wide eyes, making Jonghyun clear his throat. “Sorry, I mean, Sir. Sir Minho. Sir Choi...whatever. Sorry. It's just that you've only been in office for three days.”
“It's alright. Just don't let anyone else hear.” Minho took a deep breath and signed the report on his desk. “You do know I have to file a report on this, Jinki.”
“I do. I'm sorry. I wish I wasn't so clumsy.” Jinki looked really frustrated and Jonghyun almost felt sorry for the guy. Taemin wished they'd be dismissed because he was hungry.
Minho sighed and stood up. “You're not even clumsy in your lab, especially when you're engrossed with your work. I don't know how you keep falling over and bumping into things the moment you set foot outside your lab.”
Jinki's face contorted into a miserable pout and bowed his head even lower, mumbling apologies. Jonghyun wished Minho wasn't so cruel with the guy. He was a brilliant scientist after all. He single-handedly ran the small forensics lab in their district because those from the main section wouldn't spare their lab rats. Surely, contaminating a blood spatter wasn't that bad if he'd count the number of times Jinki's scientific guesses and discoveries helped them solve crimes.
Taemin wondered if he'd stop growing if he didn't get his food on time. Only thirty minutes of lunch break had passed, surely it wouldn't be that bad, right? And Jonghyun had his meals on the dot but he never grew physically and mentally.
Taemin had to hold his laugh at that point before turning his attention back to the meeting.
“Cut him some slack, Minho,” Jonghyun said.
“Can we eat now? I'm a growing boy,” Taemin whined at the same time.
Staring at the group and shaking his head, Minho sat down. “Fine, you can go now. I'll call for you again, Jinki, when I need you.”
Jinki bit his lip and bowed. Jonghyun glared a bit at Minho for being such a strict bastard. Taemin ushered everyone out of the door.
“You should date Minho-hyung,” Taemin suddenly said as they were walking in the hall.
Jonghyun's face went aghast. “What?!”
Taemin shook his head. “Not you, hyung. I meant Jinki-hyung. If he dates Minho-hyung, he won't have to be suspended for little things just because he's clumsy. Minho-hyung would handle it all.”
Jinki only smiled. “That's not really how things work...”
“Yeah! And how do you even think about dating such a stiff person?!” Jonghyun exclaimed, waving his arms about as if to emphasize Minho's lack of animation. “I bet he'd treat his lover the same as any other employee. Don't date him, Jinki.”
Jinki only laughed, nervously fingering the lapels of his lab coat.
Meanwhile, Taemin wore a knowing look on his face. “You just don't want Jinki-hyung to date because you like him.”
Jonghyun tripped over a well-placed trashcan. “Wh-what? I'm ...That...” he sputtered before looking at Jinki's surprised reaction. “I'm...I like boobs! Girls who are smart and have a nice smile!”
“Jinki-hyung is smart and has a nice smile,” Taemin quipped before walking ahead of them. "And you always check him out."
Jonghyun almost nodded to agree before catching himself and glowering at Taemin's back. “Taemin-ah! Come back here, you brat!”
“Hurry up! Lunch break is almost over!”
Jonghyun muttered an embarrassed apology and how he wasn't really checking Jinki out before running off towards his partner, leaving a confused scientist standing alone in the hall.
