Jonghyun found himself standing in the middle of an immensely large, beautiful garden.

His grandfather told him to wait outside while he attended a meeting, and Jonghyun, impatient as ever, decided to go exploring instead. But he forgot that he was not just in some mansion but rather in a vast palace in an unknown land. Soon, he realized that he was hopelessly lost.

“Jonghyun!” a voice called out, making him turn around. A group of children hurried towards him, their leader a tiny child Jonghyun learned was named Taemin. Jonghyun had coincidentally ran into them while he was panicking about being lost. They invited him to play catchball and he agreed, deciding that no harm could be done playing with the locals. Besides, he could ask them for directions afterwards.

“I brought more people to play,” Taemin breathlessly announced, his small ponytail bobbing as he heaved to catch his breath. He pointed to the two boys that Jonghyun hadn’t seen with them before. “This is Minho. And this, this is…”

“Onew,” the boy named Minho supplied. Jonghyun wondered if the other boy couldn’t speak, and he quickly nodded to them without looking at them too closely. But the boy named Onew whispered a greeting, and Jonghyun found himself looking up and staring at the other boy.

Onew was bigger but looked similar to Taemin. He stood apart from the others, feet shuffling too close to each other. He kept his head down, tilted at a slight angle as if he was embarrassed. For some reason, Onew looked more nervous than Jonghyun, who was the foreigner to this land.

“Hello,” Jonghyun cautiously greeted, smiling at Onew and Minho. He blinked when Onew flinched a little, but he thought it might just be that Onew wasn’t used to playing with outsiders. “Let’s go!” he said in the friendliest way he could muster, as he extended a hand towards Onew. “Can we be teammates?”

Onew stared at Jonghyun’s hand for a long time that the boy wondered if he was going to be rejected. Eventually, Onew looked up at Minho, who nodded. “Alright,” Onew finally said, taking Jonghyun’s hand and smiling. “Sure, let us be teammates.”

Jonghyun stared. How can someone have such a beautiful smile? As he stared, Onew's face slowly blurred and the colors came together, spinning rapidly and fusing together into pure white light...

-----

There was a clanging of bells, the makeshift alarm in the ship, waking up those in slumber and marking the start of another day. Jonghyun found himself staring at the planks of wood across the ceiling of his room.

He cursed lightly and tossed off his blanket, swinging his feet to the side of his bed as he sat up. He rubbed his hands over his face, groaning as he recalled his dream. After a long week, it felt like something in him clicked into place, like one of Key’s gears started turning in him. He had forgotten about that certain memory until he dreamed about it.

No wonder Onew seemed so familiar to him. They had met before—a long time ago, when Jonghyun accompanied his grandfather to talk with the Queen.

He let out a low moan as he cradled his head in his hands. Why didn’t he remember sooner? He could still picture the little boy in his mind, and while it had been so many years since that encounter, Jonghyun was almost certain that it was really Onew that he saw. But why didn’t Onew say anything? Didn’t he recognize Jonghyun? They spent a couple of hours playing then catchball with the other boys before they were called back to the palace. Maybe he knew but he was just hiding it because he’s a hostage?

Jonghyun stood up, grunting as he stretched his limbs. No wonder he thought Onew looked like the Queen. He must be a close relative, a cousin or nephew, perhaps. Maybe he just had a strong relationship with the would-be Queen, hence his stay in the royal bedchambers. But if that’s the case, why wouldn’t Onew speak about his background? It wasn’t like it was a very important role in the palace…

“Are you done letting out your angst because breakfast is ready,” came Kibum’s voice with a sharp rap on the door. “Stop making animal noises and come down.”

Chuckling, Jonghyun answered Kibum with a knock of his own before he picked up his clothes to get dressed.

--

“You’re leaving the ship?” Jinki asked, wide-eyed as he bit into soft bread. He carefully chewed on it before continuing. “But we are floating in the skies!”

Kibum laughed and emptied his coffee mug. “The ship has decreased in altitude this morning so some of us can disembark. It’ll go up until we are ready to come aboard again.” He was distracted for a moment when Jonghyun entered the mess hall. “Finally, you’ve woken up. I thought you’d spend the entire morning moaning in your room. So,” Kibum waved his fork around, “…we have to buy a lot of supplies since we’re starting to run out. Onew, do you have any idea where to get cheap but nice goods and delicious food in the marketplace?”

Jinki gave Jonghyun a small bow of his head as acknowledgment when the captain sat at the end of the table. Then, he stared at Kibum cluelessly. He had never been to the marketplace unless they passed it on their way to the temple of the lesser goddesses or during a parade. He had always been curious about the goings-on in the commoners' parts of the town, but he was never allowed to set foot in them. “I…”

“Never mind!” Kibum said, raising up his hand as if to silence him. “I can see in your eyes that you have no idea. Nobles and their snobby shopping habits.” He stood up and grabbed his brown jacket from the back of someone else’s chair. “I’ll just try to use my bargaining skills as much as I can.”

Jonghyun nodded as Kibum turned to him. “Be back before dark,” he reminded, half-heartedly breaking the shell of his egg with a teaspoon. “We might be on a truce with the palace, but we don’t know how notorious the thieves and scoundrels are out there. You might get mugged once--”

“I am sorry, but I have to disagree. Caelestia is a perfectly peaceful queendom,” Jinki tried to interject, but Jonghyun dismissed him with a wave of a hand. Sulking a bit, Jinki settled back to his seat, brooding over his mug. He was just making a solid point. What would Kibum have to fear about his kingdom--at such an early hour, even!

“Anyway, just take care and don't attract attention,” Jonghyun finally said and Kibum ushered his assistants out of the door and shuffled out. The ones left quietly ate their meal, the scrapings of metal against metal the only thing resounding in the mess hall.

“I didn’t mean to say that your country’s full of evil menaces,” Jonghyun finally said after a long interval. “I just want him to take care. A country might be peaceful, but there will always be people eager to commit crime.”

Jinki didn’t reply, but instead huffed into his mug. How can Jonghyun slander his kingdom like that when he himself kidnapped the Queen of the said kingdom? Who was the criminal here?

"Hey," Jonghyun softly said, reaching out a hand to tap Jinki's hand on the table. "Don't tell me you actually took offense in what I said?" When Jinki did not reply, Jonghyun laughed, causing him even more vexation. "Onew, Onew," Jonghyun said, smiling as he rested his chin on a hand. "How can you say Caelestia is peaceful when you do not even know what's in your marketplace?"

Jinki looked at him warily, placing his mug daintily on the table. His other hand was still captured under Jonghyun's own, but he found no reason to pull away. "What...do you mean?"

Jonghyun shook his head, as if exasperated yet amused by him. "You haven't gone to the poorer districts in your kingdom because you either refuse to or you're forbidden to do so," he answered. "Why would you be forbidden? Haven't you thought about it?"

"Well, it could be because I have a bad sense of direction and I might get lost...?"

"No. It's because your family, whoever they are, is not confident that you, a noble, can safely walk down those streets without getting mugged or injured." Jonghyun gave Jinki's hand a final squeeze before pulling away and standing up. "Whether you like it or not, that is what it is. Your kingdom...well, it is rather different from mine. But I can bet we have the same type of scoundrels roaming the city. This is why we have guards and the soldiers in the first place!"

Jinki frowned a bit as he digested Jonghyun's words. Slowly, he looked up again. "Where is your kingdom, Mr. Jonghyun?"

“I notice you didn’t say anything when I said you’re a noble,” Jonghyun remarked, lips curving into a smile. “So I guess that one guess was right?”

Jinki swallowed. “You haven’t answered my question, though. Where are you from?”

Upon his question, Jonghyun's face became clouded that Jinki instantly regretted asking. Wherever Jonghyun came from, it didn't seem that he was fond of it. He wanted to apologize, but before he could, Jonghyun had stood up and held out a hand to him. "Do you want to see something special?"

"What is it?" Jinki asked, but Jonghyun had already grabbed his hand and pulled him eagerly out of the door.

--

“Are you alright?”

Jinki nodded, but he didn’t speak. His mouth and eyes were wide open in awe. The bright blue vastness bled into his eyes that he almost felt drowning into it. Within the blue are wisps of white fluffs, like smoke billowing gently from a chimney. He could feel the ripples of energy threading through his hair and seeping into his clothes. The gentle touches of the breeze seeped into his clothing, reminding him of his roots and the power sleeping inside him. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, savoring the fresh feeling of empowerment coursing through him.

When Jinki opened his eyes, he found Jonghyun watching him in quiet amusement. He quickly looked away and fiddled with his sleeves. “I was just…I’ve never seen the sky so beautiful.” He stared at the sky once more then looked down below. The sudden sight of Caelestia so far below made him step back and lose his balance a bit.

“Careful.” Jonghyun quickly wrapped an arm around his waist. “I reckon this is your first time being high up,” he continued as he chuckled. “Most people would have problems flying this high but I guess you’re a natural, Onew.” He let Jinki grab the side of the ship and regain his balance, but did not remove his hand. “What do you think?”

“I’ve never seen Caelestia from this perspective,” Jinki breathed. “It’s very…exhilarating.” He carefully studied the landscape under them. “That’s the marketplace,” he pointed. “And the stations of the border patrol. There’s the temple of the Goddess. And there’s…” his voice wilted a bit… “There’s the palace.”

Jonghyun was quiet. Jinki waited for any teasing remark from him about being stolen from the palace, but it didn’t come. Instead, Jonghyun focused more on the structures near where the Crystal River bisects the kingdom. “What are those?”

“Those are the fiefs held by the counts,” Jinki replied. “The farms and other inland industries are managed by fiefs.”

“You let your lords rule lands for you?” Jonghyun asked.

Jinki tilted his head sideways, trying to comprehend what Jonghyun was implying. “Counts, yes. The counts have responsibility over the fiefs and reports to the Queen biweekly regarding problems and successes of their fiefs.”

Jonghyun seemed thoughtful. “There is quite a large amount of trust built towards your overlords then.”

“I do not quite understand. That has been our law since I remember.”

Laughing, Jonghyun shook his head. “Never mind my own musings. I do not trust anyone, so I cannot imagine trusting a group of lords to rule some of my lands for me, if I am a ruler.”

Jinki furrowed his brow. But before he could think of an answer, Jonghyun pointed towards the Holy Hills. “What is that?”

“Those are the Holy Hills,” Jinki replied. “Every year, the Queen goes on a pilgrimage there to give homage to the minor gods and goddesses, to recognize their blessings, and to ask for protection.”

Jonghyun hummed. “You have a lot of gods.”

Jinki looked at Jonghyun. The young man’s hair was blowing widely in the wind, and his eyes seemed stormy. But his face was of a calm demeanor, as if he was hiding something. “Do you not believe in gods, Mr. Jonghyun?”

“We…” Jonghyun sighed and turned to Jinki with a small smile, leaning his head against the side of the ship and finally letting go of his waist. “We do not have gods in our country.”

Jinki blinked in surprise. A country without a god was like a child without a parent. How could they survive without guidance from an Almighty Being? “What…what do you believe in, then?”

Jonghyun took a deep breath before replying. “We? We believe in science.”

“Science? Like alchemy?” When Jonghyun laughed out loud, Jinki almost felt offended. “I mean…science is…”

“Onew,” Jonghyun said, cupping Jinki’s face in his hands. “Science is not just mixing things and hoping to make a thing. Science is…a field of discovery and experimentation. I would teach you, but everything is way back home and…”

A religion based on discovery. Somehow, it intrigued Jinki a lot. He wanted to ask if Kibum’s explanation of how the ship works was also science. He had a feeling that he could learn so much that he could apply to his kingdom, but…

“Didn’t I ask you before,” Jonghyun softly said as he looked away to the sky, “if you’d be willing to come with us, if the negotiations pull through?”

Jinki nodded, hands clutching the edge of the vessel. He observed the kingdom below. It was so small, as if it was just a small piece of land and not a huge lifetime responsibility resting on his shoulders. His own curiosity was betraying him. Jonghyun had barely said anything about his country, yet Jinki already yearns for it. He wanted to know about that land that seemed so different from his own. But his kingdom stared at him from below. “I can’t.”

Jonghyun nodded, as if he was expecting the answer.”

“But I want to visit, if that is alright.”

Jonghyun turned back to Jinki, meeting his eyes. His expression was unreadable. “Would you? I mean…this is not really the perfect time to talk about this, seeing that we’ve kidnapped you and everything.” Jonghyun laughed, but slowly looked at Jinki in utmost sincerity. “Would you?”

Jinki nodded. “If…I’m permitted to and we remain friends then…” He didn’t even know what he was saying anymore. A few days ago, he was bent on escaping from the ship and now he’s trying to insinuate that he wanted to go with Jonghyun to see his country despite all the odds they were in. If his mother could see him now, he’d be toasted. “Maybe instead of keeping me hostage, we can go down and you can visit Caelestia in good intention…”

Jonghyun’s expression hardened and Jinki knew it was the wrong thing to say. But Jonghyun didn’t say anything. He was left shuffling nervously beside the captain, who had grown very quiet.

“Say,” Jonghyun suddenly said, making Jinki almost jump. “When you were young…do you remember a certain incident…” The young man intently stared at Jinki, as if studying him closely. “There was a big garden. And you went out with Prince Taemin and joined a bunch of boys in playing ball.”

A sharp sting of electricity ran through Jinki’s heart. Of course he remembered that well. Him trying to dress like a boy for just one time. The Queen seeing him. Taemin getting locked out of the room. Minho getting punished for something he did not do.

“Onew?” Jinki woke up from his stupor and realized that he was shaking. Jonghyun placed a hand on his shoulder, his face a picture of concern. “Are you feeling unwell?”

Jinki swallowed and sharply let out a breath. “Yes. I…I remember that day clearly.” He looked at Jonghyun. His fingers curled into fists as the events of the punishment replayed in his mind. “It was the worst day of my life.” Bowing slightly, he slid away from Jonghyun’s hand and went into the ship, leaving Jonghyun outside.

Kibum was about to die from the heat.

The weather wasn’t so bad, but the marketplace was really humid, what with a throng of bodies moving around and vendors selling literally everything from priced jewels to gutted chickens. While the collection of goods that can be bought in this place was immense, Kibum noted the lack of things he needed for their ship. The metals were not good enough and there were so few stores offering building materials. Well, it was not like Caelestia’s a mining country and they probably haven’t built a flying ship before. Kibum had to make do with whatever he could find. How thankful Jonghyun should be that he hired a resourceful engineer.

After depositing the purchases in the ship errand boys’ hands, Kibum decided to walk around a bit. Even though nobles rarely go through the marketplace, it was still a good source of gossip from all walks of life. He was primarily interested in knowing what these people think of Feritas. He knew they were labeled as pirates, all because of that fake bard who sang songs of their terrorizing fake stunts. But there should be someone who had more sense than anyone else in seeing that Feritas never looted them and was generally a peaceful ship. They didn’t have to know about the ship’s deal with the Queen anyway.

Well, would-be Queen. Jonghyun put so much of his faith on this would-be Queen that he hadn’t even met. Kibum wouldn’t be one to speak against first impressions, since he had fallen in love at first sight multiple times. But he couldn’t help but feel that Jonghyun was being romantic and thus, reckless. What if the would-be Queen decided to just shoot down their ship? They didn’t even know what kind of person Onew is.

Kibum shook his head and sighed as he tried to sweep away the anxiety in his head. When they started this mission, he pledged full allegiance and loyalty to Jonghyun. He would try t knock some sense into the captain’s head whenever he had the chance, but he wouldn’t really stop Jonghyun from doing this. It was the one chance that could save them after all.

Deep in his thoughts, Kibum walked around a corner without looking and bumped into someone. He immediately put a hand up and apologized.

“You know, in this country, that gesture is seen as rude.”

Kibum looked up warily. A familiar face sternly stared back at him. He smiled. “Well, well, if it isn’t the Captain of the Royal Guard.”

Minho wasn’t dressed in full gala this time, and was actually wearing common clothes—breeches, a white shirt, a vest. A sword still slung around his waist, but he looked more laidback today than their first meeting. Back then it looked like he swallowed his own sword. He seemed less scary and more handsome this time, but Kibum kept that thought to himself.

“What are you doing here?” Minho muttered as he placed a hand on Kibum’s back and steered him away from the crowd.

Kibum shrugged. “Shopping? We’re running out of supplies and our, ahem, hostage has to eat.”

He could only see the tiniest flicker of reaction in Minho’s eyes. “How is Onew?”

“Wouldn’t you like to know that?”

Minho grabbed Kibum’s arm. “I swear to the Goddess if you harm him or make him starve…”

Kibum wrenched his arm away from Minho’s grasp, rubbing it as he stepped back. “Excuse me, but if you would reach a proper verdict soon then we wouldn’t have to play this waiting game!”

“That’s…” Minho pressed his lips together.

Kibum waited. He’s usually very good at dealing with people, but not so much dealing with angry royal guard captains. Minho could literally slice him into two and no one would bat an eyelash.

Minho finally sighed. “Look. I’ll let you go back to your ship. I’ll send some guards to keep you safe from thieves or whatever.” He leaned closer. “But promise me you’ll take care of Onew until this is over.”

“Alright, but what is Onew to you and why are you so prot—“

“That is none of your business!”

Kibum tried not to flinch. “You look a bit tense. Do you want to talk over drinks?”

Minho rubbed his temple. “Would I want to share drinks with a criminal?”

“Hey, that’s not very nice. We had a political agreement after all.”

“Which wouldn’t be needed if you hadn’t been so rude to stomp into the castle and—“

Kibum rummaged his pockets and look at his timekeeper. “Are you sure you want to discuss this out in the streets? Where anyone can hear?” Minho quickly closed his mouth, but his stern gaze was still fixed on Kibum. “You know we can talk about this in a gentlemanly fashion.”

“What do we even need to talk about?”

Kibum shrugged. “I don’t know but since your Queen and my Captain aren’t really in talking terms, maybe we can start the ball rolling. You know, further things along? You and I know we both want this to end as quietly and quickly as possible.”

Waiting. Minho eyed him for a long time, as if spotting a lie somewhere in his eyes. Kibum held his gaze and stood up straight. He was loyal. But he also needed to make sure Jonghyun doesn’t screw this up.

After a long while, Minho let out a breath and reached into his pocket. He handed Kibum a small flat slab of wood with the symbol of a stag on it. Turning it over, Minho’s name was etched on the other side. “In two days. Find the bar with that symbol. Hand this seal to the bartender. Then wait for me.” With that, Minho briskly walked away, not even offering a look back.

Kibum stared at the wooden plate on his hand. His heart was racing. He didn’t know why he was so interested in Minho and why he was doing all of this in the first place, but he sure hoped he wasn’t about to destroy everything.

--

Minho clenched his hands as he walked, not even bothering to look back at the pirate who just spoke with him. Part of him was worried about Jinki if this standoff is prolonged, but part of him was vexed at himself for falling to that pirate’s hands.

He didn’t even look like a pirate, with that skin it looked like he spent his life as a scholar instead.

Cursing lightly, Minho sped up into a jog as he went back to his original intentions for being in the marketplace.

It looked like his plan to leave spies within the palace was a good idea. He couldn’t monitor everyone, with him mostly busy with hiding the fact that Jinki was missing. But he had to watch out for everyone, especially the emotional ones who might jeopardize the entire negotiation and bring Jinki closer to danger.

Minho hid in an alley and waited for a while. If his spies’ reports were correct, he would be able to see him soon. He hadn’t even counted to a hundred when he heard hurried footsteps. Quickly, he slid into view, making the one in front of him abruptly stop.

“Your Highness,” Minho murmured.

“Minho. What are you doing here?” Taemin was wearing commoner’s clothes. He used to do this all the time, slipping out to explore the town at his own leisure. Since he was almost never shown to the public, he can pretend to be a commoner every now and then and observe the people without being recognized.

Minho nodded. As the prince was in disguise, he couldn’t treat him with usual respect. “I heard you slipped into town first thing in the morning. I was concerned and decided to look for you.”

Taemin smiled. “Ah, I see. I was just…you know, looking for the usual…um…”

“I know.” Minho knew that Taemin sometimes visited the women in the bar and spending time with them. It was something Jinki wasn’t privy to. Taemin was always innocent and impeccable to him, but with that pressure Taemin felt the need to get out sometimes and live out of his noble birth. Minho did not stop him—he knew the prince needed it. But right now, Minho didn’t really think Taemin would be in the right mind to go visiting maidens. He was losing sleep with Jinki kidnapped and would be abreast with all the information Minho could give him. He certainly wouldn’t be in a frivolous mood.

Minho didn’t want to suspect, but he couldn’t help it.

“You didn’t have to look for me then!” Taemin said, almost scolding. “I do this all the time, you should be used to me.”

“Pirates were spotted in the marketplace,” Minho softly said, glad that Taemin froze upon hearing it. “And the Princess of the North is here to see you.”

Taemin perked up. “She didn’t tell me she’d be here. And she couldn’t have known about…” The young prince’s face grew dark.

Minho held out a hand. “Then let us be off so you can prepare to meet with the princess.” He could feel Taemin’s reluctance as he accepted Minho’s hand. “I’m doing everything I can to rescue your brother, Your Highness,” Minho whispered. “I hope you can keep your trust in me.”

Taemin sighed. “I do,” he replied, but he looked away from Minho’s solemn look.

I hope Jonghyun didn't take offence to Jinki saying that the day they met was the worst day of Jinki's life. I wonder if they'll be able to talk about that later. It seems that Jinki is learning a lot about his country, at least things that might have been hidden from him. I wonder if he'd try to make some changes once (if) he gets back home and becomes Queen. And what would become of the pirates?

Minkeeeyyyyyyy! I'm pretty sure Minho is in love with Jinki, but maybe he and Kibum could be a thing? After they meet and talk and make arrangements and figure out a way to get things moving more quickly. And after Jongyu get together and maybe like run the kingdom? Well, that one's a little reaching, but I'm really hoping that Captain and his crew will stick around after this whole ordeal. And what was Taemin doing? OMG if he's out there ruining shit I'm gonna be so mad at him. I wish he would just trust Minho and chill out. I get that he wants to do something to save his brother, but his impulsive behavior might mess everything up!

Thanks for this update, I'm so excited with every new piece and I'm really excited to see what happens next!

Hm, I think Jonghyun is more confused as to why Jinki would say something like that. His own memory of the day is blurry anyway XD;. Not sure what Jinki's planning for the future since he can't seem to escape from the ship, though!

Hmm...IDK what's going on with MinKey at the moment, but it might become clearer soon! :D As for Taemin....................................................well XD.

Thank you so much for reading!

And thank you! I'm fine! Just really busy with work so I don't have time to sit down and write (although I spam twitter anyway...). I appreciate your concern so much <33

I love this story so much, from the intensity at the few first chapters to the sassiness named Kibum and a bit of love sick! jonghyun haha ;; i'm usually a little reluctant when it comes to unfinished story since the waiting would kill me but I can't help it this time because uh magic and pirates in one setting and gosh jinki as eunsook but not really eunsook I'm crying. Plus I love jonghyun in here. He just seems like a lovestruck teengirl except that he's supposed to be a ruthless pirate captain lol
So in short that I just want you to know that I'm in love with your writing. Thank you for sharing and might the muse never leaves you :)
