Jinki woke up to the sound of pacing in front of his bedroom. Blinking back sleep, he yawned and headed for the door, opening it just a crack to let a sliver of light in so he could see what was going on outside.
Dragging his feet around as he paced, Kibum was alone in the hallway, walking back and forth while muttering to himself. He has both his hands buried in his hair, his head bowed as he retraced his steps over and over across Jinki’s bedroom door.
“Kibum?” Jinki called out, voice still thick with sleep.
Kibum jumped in surprise and dropped his hands, leaving his hair in a mess. “Oh, hyung. Sorry to wake you.” With a nod, Kibum hurriedly shuffled towards his own room, but not before getting his arm caught in Jinki’s grasp.
“What’s up?” Jinki asked softly as he pulled the man closer. He had the tendency to be extra cuddly during the night, smiling as he felt Kibum welcome his warmth. “Can’t sleep?”
“Just…worried for tomorrow.” Kibum sighed.
Jinki then remembered. Tomorrow would be Kibum’s debut stage as a musical actor. He knew how much a debut stage meant and how terrifying it was from his own experiences. Encouragements and empty praises would help boost morale, but wouldn’t really help with the confidence and energy one needed for his first stage. He knew words wouldn’t help Kibum right now; he’d just end up feeling more pressure.
“What…” Jinki started, but shut his mouth. He had been in musicals, too, but he had no idea how to comfort someone in the same state. He had gotten by before by visiting his mom, but Kibum’s family was far away.
What did his mom do to make him less nervous then?
As Kibum stared at him in slight worry, Jinki decided that he just had to follow what instincts told him to do.
So instead of comforting Kibum with words, Jinki snaked his hands around Kibum’s waist tightly.
“Hyung?”
“Let’s go to bed, Kibum.” Jinki urged, pulling the younger man towards his bedroom and ignoring any complaints that sputtered out of Kibum’s lips. He headed for the bed and slid on it, pulling Kibum with him as they nestled on the pillows.
“Hyung, I can’t…”
“Sshh…” Jinki reached for Kibum’s nape to draw him closer so that his head nestled on the pillow and against Jinki’s shoulder.
“It’s hot,” Kibum complained, and Jinki smiled but kept quiet, letting the younger man shift until he lay comfortably on the bed.
“They say Kyuhyun-hyung is better,” Kibum muttered with a mouthful of Jinki’s shirt
“Mhmm,” was Jinki’s only reply.
“They say I lack stage presence.”
“Okay.”
“And that…that I don’t really say my lines properly.”
“Mm.”
It went on for a bit, with Kibum airing out every worry and every little thing he heard from people, as Jinki patted his back affectionately. Soon, Kibum had run out of things to complain about. There was only silence as Kibum’s breathing slowly grew steady beneath the pats on his back and the running fingers through his hair.
“Do you feel better now?” Jinki muttered against Kibum’s hair.
“Yes.”
“Okay, now we go to sleep.”
Kibum rested his head on the crook of Jinki’s shoulder, the shadow of his smile felt on Jinki’s skin. “Thank you,” he whispered.
Jinki gave no reply, but they both knew that tomorrow, he’s going to be the brightest.
